WBC president backs Canelo Alvarez: ‘The greatest lost’

The President of the World Boxing Council (WBC) Mauricio Suleiman supported the Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) after losing to the Russian Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs).

The functionary is confident that Alvarez will draw the right conclusions and come back stronger.

“In boxing, like in life, you win and you lose. In this regard, it is very important to be able to endure adversity, accept failures and have the maturity to get up and move on,” said Suleiman. – It happened in September 2013, when Saul entered the ring to face one of the most significant fighters at that time, Floyd Mayweather. His personality prompted him to ask for this fight and the result was unfavorable – he lost the title and his perfect record.”

“The greatest in history lost: Muhammad Ali, Julio Cesar Chavez, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Manny Pacquiao, Mike Tyson and others – all these legendary boxers who were considered invincible lost. What happened next? They showed greatness by returning to build their legacy, the functionary recalls. “Canelo lost to Floyd and was able to accept it and rise up. He built new plans and ambitious dreams, worked and stayed with his team. He continued to learn, matured as an athlete and as a person, and in the next nine years, after that failure, he achieved very important victories that made him the most important boxer of our time.

“Canelo lost, he was looking for a more dangerous challenge against an unbeaten opponent and in a heavier category. There is nothing to be ashamed of here. I have no doubt that he will rest, draw the necessary conclusions again and return to the position that belongs to him. He still has a lot to give to Mexico, boxing and himself, ”concluded Mauricio.
