Volkanovski does not rule out that the upcoming fight could be Makhachev’s last appearance in the lightweight division.
“Yeah, I think it’s a great idea, but a lot will depend on him because it’s hard for him to make weight and he’s talking about potentially moving up to the welterweight division,” the Australian told MMAJunkie. “If he decides to stay, we’ll do it. Either way, there are a lot of awesome fights for me in the lightweight division and I’m excited about it. It would be nice to fight Justin Gaethje, but the trilogy with Islam is important for my legacy.”
Volkanovski has previously pledged to be an active double champion and keep both the UFC’s featherweight and lightweight divisions moving.
Recall that last week, the Australian agreed on short notice to replace the injured Charles Oliveira and face the Russian on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.
