Volkanovski named next opponent after Makhachev

After agreeing to fight Islam Makhachev, reigning UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has not given up on defending his title against Elijah Topuria, a bout that should headline UFC 297 in Toronto on Jan. 20.

“Yeah, one hundred percent – I’ll do it,” the Australian said on another edition of The MMA Hour program. “I’m going to be a double champion and I want to defend both titles. They think it’s impossible, but I can keep both divisions busy – I definitely plan to fight in January.”

It was previously reported that if Volkanovski fails to recover and prepare for a title defense in three months, the organization will introduce an interim featherweight championship belt to be fought by Max Holloway and Elijah Topuria in a numbered Canadian event.

As for the lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Alex Volkanovski, it will headline this weekend’s UFC 294 event in Abu Dhabi. The Australian fighter accepted a fight with the Russian on short notice last week, agreeing to replace the injured Charles Oliveira, who received a dissection.
