“I really really wanted to fight in December, so after calling out Chito, I called the UFC, but they already had their own plans,” MMAFighting quoted the American as saying. “They were trying to put Colby Covington and Leon Edwards together.”
“I asked them to put me on that card, but they said I should headline my own show, and I think that’s pretty damn cool. I’m excited about the idea. UFC 300 is in April and that would be great, but they want me to be the only champion on the card. I’m assuming I’ll fight before UFC 300.”
On Aug. 19 at UFC 292 in Boston, Sean O’Malley took the UFC flyweight championship belt from Aljamain Sterling, finishing his compatriot by TKO in the second round, before announcing that he wants to make his first title defense in December against the division’s No. 6 Marlon Vera, who suffered the only loss of his career three years ago.
UFC 296, headlined by a welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington, will take place Dec. 16 in Las Vegas.
