Tyson Fury has finished with his professional boxing career, but that doesn’t mean he’s done fighting just yet.
Following a stunning sixth-round knockout over Dillian Whyte in front of 94,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in England, the 33-year-old heavyweight champion confirmed he has officially retired, moving his record to 32-0-1 with the win.
“Before I fought Deontay Wilder [the third time], I was at my house in Vegas, and I said to [my wife] Paris, ‘This is going to be the last fight,'” Fury said at the post-fight press conference. “I just don’t want to do it anymore. After the fight, she said that she was happy and it would be her last. It’s over. I felt happy. I got a call from Frank [Warren] requesting that we do a homecoming bout at Wembley. Paris said, “I have to get out of here one more time.” This was difficult because it was my last fight.
“I come back for a big, big fight at home. It was amazing. It couldn’t be better. These past few years have been magical. It’s been absolutely more than I ever dreamed of as a kid and as an adult. Every belt I could win was mine. There’s nothing I can do more. Every belt was won by me. If this was a computer game, it would definitely be completed for sure.”
Although Fury has finished his career in boxing with no plans of touching his record, he still hopes to fight some good fighters, including Francis Ngannou (UFC heavyweight champion), who was there to support him just seconds after his victory over Whyte.
Ngannou had been wanting to fight Fury for some time. With his UFC contract due to expire at the end of 2022,, he may finally be available to make that happen.
It’s a matchup Fury wants, and he’s willing to meet Ngannou under a special set of rules that would even the playing field for both of them.
“I will not rule out exhibitions, for sure,” Fury said about his future. “Get some of that Floyd Mayweather money. I want to have fun. I’m an entertaining. It’s my passion to entertain. It’s my goal to have fun.
“Francis Ngannou, who was present today is on my hitlist for an exhibition fight. We can do it however he wishes — whether he’s in a cage or in a boxing arena, with gloves for boxing, UFC gloves, or in a boxing boxing ring. I think everyone wants to see it. He’s a monster of a guy. He’s a monster of an individual. It will definitely be a battle of titans .”
Fury vs. Ngannou may be the most important heavyweight bout in combat sports history, and both fighters are involved.
The proposed bout will have to be postponed until at least 2023, due to Ngannou’s contract with UFC and an ACL operation in March which will leave the champ out for the rest of the year.
Fury doesn’t want to stop fighting the best boxer. This is why he declined to answer a question regarding holding on to his titles in order to potentially face the winner of the planned rematch between Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk.
“I’m happy with my decisions,” Fury said. Fury said, “I am going home to my family with my spouse and my children. I spent a lot time traveling. It’s been a while since I was last away. Everything I wanted has been fulfilled.
“I’m going to retire as the only second heavyweight in history after Rocky Marciano to retire undefeated.”
