Former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson, who suffered his seventh consecutive defeat against Paddy Pimblett last December, stepped in to fight the Brit with a serious injury that prevented him from performing to his full potential.
The American fighter told his fans on social networking site.
“Two weeks before Thanksgiving I messed up in training and tore knee ligaments,” Ferguson wrote. “I kept it to myself until after the fight. I trained like no one knew, even though it hurt like hell. Only told some of my team two weeks before the fight.”
“I had knee surgery last Thursday, just a week after my elbow surgery. Decided to kill two birds with one stone. Now it’s over with and I can do what I do best. No despair – just recovery.”
The lightweight fight, which took place Dec. 16 at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, went the full distance and ended with the Briton winning by unanimous decision.
The 39-year-old Tony Ferguson recorded his last win in June 2019, winning by technical knockout over Donald Cerrone, who was unable to make it to the third round due to a swollen eye.
