Tom Aspinall has apologized to Jon Jones

UFC interim heavyweight titleholder Tom Aspinall has apologized to the division’s current champion, Jon Jones, who was critical of the Brit who demanded the title be stripped from him.

“You’re right. Sorry Jon,” Aspinall wrote on social media, commenting on the American’s words.

A few hours earlier, Jones had posted the following statement on social media:

“For 15 years now I have faced the toughest competition this world has to offer. During training camp for a title defense, I suffered a serious injury that required surgery for the first time in my career.”

“Now all sorts of rookies are demanding that I be stripped of my title. Zero wins over legends, zero title defenses, and they already think they can demand something from Dana – it’s funny. In my 15-year career, I’ve seen a lot of guys who should have been great, but there was always only one Jon Jones – don’t forget that”

Jon Jones was scheduled to make his title defense against fellow countryman Stipe Miocic on November 11 at UFC 295 in New York City, but pulled out of the bout two weeks before the tournament after tearing a pectoral muscle, while Tom Aspinall won the interim championship belt in a numbered event by knocking out Russian Sergey Pavlovic in 69 seconds.

Over the weekend, UFC head honcho Dana White confirmed that the organization will stick to the same script and will hold a title fight between Jones and Miocic once the champion recovers from his injury.
