in the evening of boxing, which took place last Saturday in Las Vegas (USA) – in the main event, Gennady Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) from Kazakhstan failed to defeat the undisputed super middleweight champion Mexican Saul Alvarez (58-2- 2, 39 KO) and lost by unanimous decision.

The promoter was surprised by the judge’s verdict. Like the vast majority of reviewers, he
thinksthat the fight was not so competitive: “In the main event, two legends came together, two great fighters. It was nice to see Canelo win. And Golovkin, I suspect, will reproach himself for not turning on to the fullest a little earlier. Although, on the other hand, Alvarez must be given credit – he had an incredible first half of the fight, his movements were simply unforgettable.

“Looks like Canelo broke his arm during the fight. I think his victory is absolutely deserved. I had about 9-3 in his favor, although I have to give credit to Gennady – he ended the fight well. But in the first half of the fight, he picked up blows. Judge’s verdict? Yes, he is very close. One more round and it would have been a draw,” says Hearn.

Despite the fact that the Mexican had previously announced a final transition to light heavyweight in 2023, the promoter seems to think otherwise: “Canelo’s primary goal is a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. He really wants to close the May defeat. But the Russian has a very tough fight ahead of him with Gilberto Ramirez. Let’s see if he can pass it. Although, I admit that for Canelo to close that defeat is a matter of principle. I’m not sure Canelo wants to move to light heavyweight permanently. But I know for sure that in the fight Bivol vs Ramirez he will be torn: on the one hand, he wants victory for his compatriot and all of Mexico, and on the other hand, he wants to be the first to defeat Bivol.

Hearn even came up with an “option that will suit everyone”: “Does Bivol dream of becoming the absolute world champion? So he will agree to go down to Canelo at super middleweight and fight for all the belts. What’s next for Golovkin? It’s up to him to decide. Can he become a middleweight absolute? Or is it better to retire? I really don’t know…”

Golovkin and Alvarez had already met twice before: in 2017, the winner was not determined, and 12 months later the Mexican won – both fights took place in the middleweight limit.

The legendary Roberto Duran is dissatisfied with Golovkin: “Lazy and weak.” It is known that the next opponent was chosen for the Kazakhstani – fight or chase the title.
