The IBF recently ordered undisputed super lightweight champion Josh Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) to defend her title against Jeremias Ponce (30-0, 20 KOs) from Argentina. As writes
boxing scenethe parties have until August 23 to agree without promotional bidding.
When the Scot won Jose Ramirez in the battle for the absolute, all four organizations lined up approximately in this line: first there should be protection in the WBO, then the WBC, even later the WBA, and already at the end the IBF.
By fighting Jack Catterall, Josh respected the WBO.
He was then ordered by the WBA to go against the little-known Alberto Puello; Taylor scored on this option – and lost the belt of this organization.
Shortly thereafter, the WBC reminded the Scot that it was time to fight against Jose Cepeda, but he again pushed the challenger and eventually lost this belt as well.
(The waivers were likely due in part to still having a rematch with Catterall, whom Taylor defeated in a highly controversial decision in February. A return bout was or is planned for November 26.)
It was the turn of the IBF – and now, there should be a Taylor-Ponce fight, although the latter is not even a mandatory contender (it was assumed that he would fight in the eliminator against Subriel Matias).
The meeting will potentially take place in October, but there is a chance that Josh will give up this title as well – and simply go to welterweight (up to 66.7 kg). Or maybe a rematch with Catterall.
