Sterling called Khabib’s popularity a credit to McGregor

Reigning UFC flyweight champion Aljamain Sterling, who is set to make his title defense against Sean O’Malley this weekend, believes the fight is to the organization what the Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor fight once was.

“It’s a win-win for the UFC,” the American said on another edition of The MMA Hour program. “It’s one of those possibilities that was in the Conor-Habib fight. Khabib wouldn’t have gotten this high without Conor. He may have been popular in the Caucasus, but he wouldn’t have been as popular in the States without Conor McGregor.”

“Our situation is similar, except that the Conor McGregor copy of Conor McGregor opposing me isn’t as good. This is my opportunity to catapult myself upward and take everything this man has. I’m going to take everything from him, that’s my moment. Obviously, if he wins, by doing so, he’s validated everything he’s done up to this point in his career”

As a reminder, the featherweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley will be the main event of UFC 292, which takes place on August 19 in Boston.
