Spence’s alleged rival is announced. And he’s cooler than Thurman

It looks like unified welterweight champion American Errol Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) will stay in the division for at least one more fight. Promoter Richard Schafer of Probellum claims that the champion will give the fight to his fighter.

Spence is disappointed that his fight with Crawford is definitively thwarted: Terence announced the name of his opponent yesterday, there is a date and a place. The unified champion even announced that he would rise to the first middleweight.

But Shafer says negotiations are underway for a fight between Spence and WBA World belt holder in the same weight, Eimantas Stanyonis (14-0, 9 KOs) from Lithuania, who took the belt from Russian Radjab Butaev. Errol holds WBA Super, WBC and IBF titles.

By
words Schafer, “Stanyonis first gave the nod to Spence and Crawford to determine the absolute world champion and agreed to a release. But now that this fight has been disrupted, Eimantas is not going to give up his right. And requires a fight in the status of a mandatory challenger from the WBA.

Schafer claims that they have previously sought a fight with Spence, but “now things have moved much more actively – negotiations are taking place at an accelerated pace.”

It was previously assumed that in the event of a breakdown in the fight with Crawford, the unified champion will fight with the ex-division leader compatriot Keith Thurman, who has lost his leading position due to injuries and long layoffs – since 2019 he had only one fight, beat the ex-champion with a division below his compatriot Mario Barrios.

Rumor has it that Crawford will receive an astronomical fee for a fight with a Russian – even more than he would receive for a fight with Spence.
