Sergey Kovalev: “If Canelo gave me one more month…”

Former world light heavyweight champion Russian Sergey Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs) is sure that he could have been in the place of compatriot Dmitry Bivol and defeated the Mexican Canelo Alvarez back in 2019 if he had had more time to prepare .

Recall, on May 8, Bivol defeated Alvarez on points, while Sergey was knocked out by Canelo in the 11th round.

“Of course, I watched the fight (Bivol-Canelo),” says Kovalev, “and believe me, if Canelo gave me one more month of rest after my previous fight, which I had in my hometown in August 2019, then the result of our fight was exactly the same as his fight with Bivol.”

“I had only five days of rest after the fight (with Yarde), – Sergey lamented, – after which I changed the time zone, returning from Russia to the USA, and began preparing for Canelo. It’s just crazy – only nine weeks between fights. I dropped weight for the fight with Yard with 91 kg. I lost 12 kilos for this fight.”

In a matter of hours, Kovalev will have his first fight since losing to Canelo. He will make his debut in the heavy category (up to 90.7 kg) with a duel against the Bulgarian Tervel Pulev. He could drink the sea – our preview for this fight,
