Sergey Kovalev: “First of all, money motivates me”

The age ex-world champion Russian Sergey Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs) will resume his career after a long downtime (2.5 years) and will fight with the Olympic medalist from Bulgaria Tervel Pulev (16-0, 13 KOs) – the fight will take place on 14 May on arena The Forum in Inglewood (California, USA).

The upcoming fight is Kovalev’s debut in the cruiserweight limit. On the eve of the fight, the ex-leader of light heavy
talked about his motivation: What motivates me to keep fighting? First of all, it’s money (laughs). And money is energy. Secondly, my son motivates me. I want to be world champion again to show him what it means to never give up. Now everything I do is for children. I tell and show them what it means to “follow your dreams.”

“If I ended my career now, I would feel discomfort for the rest of my life. After all, after the defeat of Canelo Alvarez, I am no longer on top of the world. Cruiserweight will be different. And the most important thing is that I no longer have to worry about the weight limit. It’s no secret that the last two years of playing light heavy have been hell for me. And now I have a new chapter in my career. I plan to box for a few more years, but no more than three. I don’t know how many fights I have to fight before I take the title. But immediately after that I will end my career. Even if it happens next year. We’ll see… I have no problem entering the ring in my 50s. Don’t forget that I spent two years outside the ring. I’m fresh,” says the veteran.

Finally, Kovalev remembered the boxing YouTuber: “On the other hand, if Jake Paul suddenly wants to box, then I’m ready. I will knock him out.”

Interestingly, earlier Kovalev claimed that he was “not returning because of the money.” The veteran made it clear that he would never return to 79.4 kg: “Why should I cut off my hand?”
