Sean O’Malley: “I’m the UFC’s biggest star”

Reigning UFC flyweight champion Sean O’Malley, who took the championship belt from Aljamain Sterling two weeks ago, believes he has already achieved the status of being the biggest star in the world’s strongest league.

The American said this on another edition of his podcast, commenting on his recent altercation with Georgian welterweight Ilia Topuria.

“I think Ilia is a little bit out of his head – he said he wouldn’t want to fight me if he beat Volkanovski because I’m too easy an opponent,” O’Malley said. “I think he looked pretty damn stupid while doing that because I’m the champion and the biggest star in the UFC.”

“His words make me think that either he just asked someone to write it for him or he had trouble translating it. Because that was one of the dumbest things a UFC fighter has ever said. I would have pushed for that fight, but he must have looked at me and thought, ‘Damn, this is not a good fight for me'”

On August 19 at UFC 292 in Boston, Sean O’Malley finished Aljamain Sterling by technical knockout in the second round, after the fight he stated after the fight that he wants to make his first title defense this December against Marlon Vera, who three years ago handed him the only defeat of his career. The American fighter also did not rule out moving up to welterweight if Elijah Topuria can take the championship belt away from Alex Volkanovski.
