Ruiz vs Ortiz. Teddy Atlas bets on the underdog?

4 September Crypto Arena (Los Angeles, USA) in the main event of the PPV show from Al Haymon (Premier Boxing Champions) top heavyweights will meet – the ex-united world champion Mexican-American Andy Ruiz Jr. (34-2, 22 KOs) will fight with the age ex-applicant from Cuba Luis Ortiz (33-2, 28 KOs).

Ex-coach and ex-commentator
Teddy Atlas talks about the fight: “In theory, Ruiz should win. After all, Ortiz is no longer a young fighter. And he lost all the time when he went to the top opposition. But, on the other hand, Ortiz fought Deontay Wilder twice. And in the first fight, he completely shocked him. This is not just a puncher, but also a very technical fighter, although he is already 43 years old. And he has a lot of amateur fights behind him. And you know what a cool amateur boxing training program is in Cuba.”

“Where am I going. It’s only on the face of it that Ruiz should be winning. But he looked indistinct in the last match held against the 40-year-old Chris Arreola. I don’t know what exactly went wrong. It is possible that he lost weight too quickly. I don’t know for sure. But he looked slurred, he was shocked. It’s no secret that Ortiz’s shots are at least as good as Arreola’s. And compared to the Cuban, Chris was on a losing streak, long past his career peak. Nobody thought that it would be a competitive fight. Including me, ”Atlas shared his opinion.

“That was the first (and apparently the last one is WMMAA) Ruiz fight under new coach Eddie Reynoso, reminds Atlas. — He seems to have hit a tough Team Canelo Alvarezbut it still didn’t help him. He looked like himself. But, as before, we must pay tribute – this is a brave fighter. In the battle with Arreola, he was on the verge of survival. And yes, I’m hinting that if Chris almost knocked out Ruiz, then Ortiz has a chance. It seems to me that during the fight there will be an episode in which the veteran will have chances to upset the favorite. And this will be the most interesting moment of the fight. Ortiz? How do we usually talk about it? We joke that no one knows how old he really is.”

The columnist believes that “after the defeat of Ruiz in a rematch against Anthony Joshua, everyone decided that he simply did not prepare for the fight. And then there’s the indistinct performance against Arreola with a new coach. Expectations were high, but he did not live up to them. So some wrote him off. You need to understand that this fight is extremely important for Ruiz. He must prove by deed that he is still at the top of the division. And in the case of an indistinct performance, he can erase himself from the elite forever. Therefore, in this fight there is much more pressure on him. That’s the whole point of the fight.”

Earlier this month, Ruiz stated: “I want Wilder, I won’t retire until I’m WBC champion.” And the ex-champion also said when Ryan Garcia really shines and shared his opinion about the best heavyweight in the world: “Usyk is fearless, this is one of the keys to victory.”
