“I think it’s a good direction and the most logical choice,” the Australian told Submission Radio. “I heard there’s a UFC tournament coming up in Perth in August and I’d like to do a show at it, put on a show there. I want to fight for the title and I realize that waiting is too long. It’s not like Sean is busy, he doesn’t have a fight scheduled, so it’s a logical step.”
Last September, Sean Strickland shocked the mixed martial arts world by defeating Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision in dominant fashion to take the UFC middleweight championship belt from the Nigerian.
In January of this year, the American lost his title at UFC 297 in Toronto, losing by split decision to Dricus Du Plessis, who had previously knocked out Whittaker in a contender’s bout.
