Possum tactic is good for Romero vs Davis – ex-champ’s advice

Former two-time world champion Sean Porter talked about the chances of American lightweight Rolando Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) to upset WBA World belt holder star compatriot Gervont Davis (26-0, 24 KOs) – they will fight this Saturday in New York ( USA), and the event will be shown on Showtime PPV.

Porter insists thatthat Romero should not force things: “I think he needs to hide his punches. And you also need to hide your plan for battle, do not rush openly. So he can “bargain” himself a few rounds. And then you can try something more. To me, this is the best thing he can do. If he quickly shows his intentions in the ring, if “Tank” Davis and his trainer Kel (Kelvin Ford) see them, they will quickly miscalculate him. I don’t think Romero can run on his feet.”

“What tactic should he use against Gervonta? Porter smiles. “Well, there’s only one option, possum tactics. That is, you need to deceive your opponent, hide your blow and find the right moment to deliver it. He will not be able to outbox “Tank”. Even if you are lucky to hit with a two, it is better to immediately wind circles around the perimeter of the ring, because if he tries to repeat all this, then there is a risk of missing many times more.

“No, Rollie doesn’t outbox Davis. And he doesn’t have to worry about the rounds. You don’t have to count anything. Only one thing is to wait for the moment when there is a chance to knock out an opponent. His promise to knock out Gervonta in the first round? Well, he should have said that he would need more than one round. That is why “Tank” and all of us reacted to this promise in the same way – we all yelled in one voice in shock: “What? What?” Yes, all these promises are fun and cool. But experience is experience,” Porter recalls.

The ex-champion shared his prediction: “We didn’t expect Davis to respond to Romero in such an elegant way. For him, all these press conferences are already a common thing. He knows when to answer, what to answer, and when to remain silent. He will answer in the ring – turn on, turn off the light to the opponent and that’s it. I think we’re all thinking about Romero the same way now: “Oh, this dude has no idea what’s in store for him in the ring…” How would I react if someone promised to take me out in the opening round? I guess I would have laughed and said: “You will not understand what awaits you in the ring until you hear the gong …”

Yesterday at a press conference, Davis said: “Romero is not an awkward boxer, but a dumb one.” Show promoter Leonard Ellerbee says the champion is pissed off at Rollie’s disrespect.
