Honda Center, Anaheim, California, USA. In the main fight of the show, the Mexican middleweight (up to 72.6 kg) Jaime Munguia (40-0, 32 KO) ran over the Irish middle peasant Jimmy Kelly (26-3, 10 KOs).
The soldiers looked at each other for a long time. Munguia jabbed a lot, Kelly was winding circles around the perimeter of the ring. In the last seconds of the opening round, the middleweights exchanged body blows. In the 2nd round, Kelly shocked the Mexican with a left counterhook, but did not have time to develop the situation. The Irishman has a simple tactic: at a long distance he is in no way inferior to the favorite, and at close range he quickly clinches. So far, he’s holding his own.
The fight was a bit like Munguia’s fight with Dennis Hogan, when the Mexican won a controversial victory. The Mexican favorite was inferior in speed, did not cut the corners of the ring, attacked sweepingly and often fell for the Irishman’s counterattacks.
Alas, Kelly only lasted until the 5th round. He began to grab the opponent every now and then, received a remark from the referee. Then he missed a left hook and ended up on the floor. He got to his feet, but yawned a blow from below – knockdown No. 2. For the third time in this three-minute period, Kelly was on the floor in the last seconds of the round – he was squeezed into the corner of the ring, he picked up blows. The Irishman got to his feet, but the referee decided to stop the fight.
