Medical verdict on Khamzat Chimaev’s injury announced

No. 9 ranked UFC middleweight prospect Hamzat Chimaev avoided a broken arm in his challenger bout against Kamaru Usman a week ago at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.

This was reported by ESPN with reference to the manager of the Chechen fighter, Mahdi Shammas. According to Shammas, a medical examination ruled out a fracture, but found a torn ligament in his right hand. Borz will likely not require surgery, but will wear a special bandage for the next four weeks, after which the attending physician will re-evaluate the injury.

The middleweight fight, which was the number two contender in the numbered event, went all three rounds and ended with Chimaev winning by a majority of the judges’ votes, with UFC head honcho Dana White confirming the Chechen’s challenger status after the fight.

At the same time, the coach of the division’s current champion, Sean Strickland, Eric Nixick, announced that a title fight against Khamzat Chimaev is tentatively scheduled for the first quarter of next year.

As a reminder, Kamaru Usman accepted a contender fight with Chimaev on eleven days notice, agreeing to replace Paulo Costa, who pulled out due to illness.
