Lomachenko vs Stevenson next year: Arum announces plans

Former world champion in three categories, Ukrainian Vasily Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs), as previously reported, can return to the ring in October this year, and then, if he wins, meet the current WBC and WBO title holder in the second Featherweight American Shakur Stevenson (18-0, 9 KOs).

This was told by the head of the promotional company Top Rank Bob Arum.

“I can’t speak for Ryan Garcia because he plays for Golden Boy. We didn’t discuss anything with them,” Arum said. – In our own roster, we hope to return Lomachenko to the ring. If everything goes well, if he is released from the Ukrainian army, we can get Lomachenko back in action in October, and then next year, he will have many options.”

“The one that needs to come to life may not be the next for each of them, but as the play progresses, maybe next year is the fight everyone is dying to see: Shakur Stevenson vs. Lomachenko. Both guys want this fight,” said the promoter.

According to Arum, the search for an opponent for Lomachenko is already underway:

“I think (Top Rank VP) Carl Moretti is working with our matchmakers to pick the right opponent (for Lomachenko). I’m sure they’ll find someone who fits all the criteria. Don’t forget that Loma hasn’t competed since December, if I’m not mistaken.”

Note that just a couple of days ago, Arum said that he was going to make Lomachenko fight for the “absolute” in lightweight against American Devin Haney if he defeated George Kambosos in a rematch. Whereas Stevenson himself said that he was not going to throw a fan at Lomachenko.
