Jason Wilnis will never pretend he’s the best trash talker – he only asks people to look at his resume now that he’s fighting in MMA.
The 31-year old former GLORY Middleweight Kickboxing Champion is a rarity because he has wins over UFC champion Israel Adesanya as well as top prospects Alex Pereira.
As he gets ready for his third MMA bout at KSW 70, Wilnis, he knows he won’t be fighting either of them immediately. He does however predict that they will cross paths again.
” Anyone can speak what they like,” Wilnis said to MMA Fighting. Although I’m not very talkative, Pereira has two wins and me one. Adesanya is my only win. I even have a win over Joe Schilling, [and] he has one win over me.
” I have a lot to compare with them, even though I’m not able to do as much in MMA than I did in kickboxing. We’re still working on it. I’m eager to match these men again, show my skills and get rematches. My MMA .”
skill.
So far, Wilnis’ young MMA career has seen him accumulate a 2-0 mark with just one knockout. He will now attempt to win his third victory against Radoslaw Paczuski, another undefeated fighter.
Wilnis isn’t looking to follow in the footsteps of Adesanya or Pereira, but he knows the comparisons are tough to ignore given the success they’ve both found in a relatively short time since making the full-time transition to MMA.
“We have a lot of kickboxing experience,” Wilnis explained. It helps in the cage. Because we stand up, it helps. Kickboxing is what we do, and it helps us to stand up.
” We have different paths but we might be able to see one another in the UFC. That’s what I believe for Alex Pereira. He wants to fight Adesanya. I also want to fight one of them. There are many paths, but the goal is always the same .”
While kickboxers have been fighting in MMA since the beginning, Wilnis believes he understands what is expected if he wants to be a long-term success. Because he has a reputation for his ferocious striking style, the man nicknamed “Psycho” has worked diligently to add all of the other parts to his game that will allow him to face off with any style of opponent without panicking that he’ll almost certainly be fighting off takedowns.
Despite what might be perceived as deficiencies when he first started, Wilnis found himself enjoying MMA more than he ever imagined.
“It’s a totally different world,” he said. I had to learn how to wrestle. “I had to learn wrestling, grappling, fighting the cage, fighting my back, and learning the escapes and the clinch. Standing strikes are different also. You have a different stance. You may take a wider stance, or a lower one. The combinations you make are smaller and more personal.
“We had to train a lot to get this done. A lot of training, but I think I’m on a good level now. The way MMA is done with shorter gloves and less complicated combinations. I prefer the clinch and elbows to kickboxing .”
.
Wilnis plans to face Adesanya once again. He compliments “The last Stylebender” on the adaptability of his striking style for MMA. As one of the top pound-for-pound fighters, he has become a true champion in the sport.
Wilnis believes he has those same abilities, and now, he’s just anxious to show it off.
“This type of style is different than kickboxing,” he said. He said, “I trained with some men who are good at kickboxing but come to MMA where their stances differ from mine. Because they don’t know the combinations and are therefore prone to being taken down, For some kickboxers like Adesanya, he’s more capable of throwing strikes, and his movements are more efficient in MMA than kickboxing.
“He understands the game good. He just finds the right fit for everything. Some guys just try to kickbox but in MMA, that doesn’t work. I’m getting more confident. Now I’m more confident. I am confident in my abilities as a MMA fighter. I have some good experience for this third fight and I’m a lot more confident.”
