Islam Makhachev assessed the likelihood of a fight with Colby Covington

Reigning UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev doesn’t think the league’s management will allow him to share the octagon with Colby Covington, who will try to take the UFC welterweight title from Briton Leon Edwards on Dec. 16.

“Yes, there are talks, but I don’t see the UFC showing interest in it yet, because I have at most two more fights in my division so I could say that I don’t have anyone to fight there anymore,” the Russian said in an interview “Match TV”.

Makhachev plans to personally discuss his return to the octagon with league officials as early as next month when he attends UFC 296 in Las Vegas.

“There will be a tournament in December. Just our Tagir Ulanbekov will fight. I plan to go and support him. Unless, of course, any force majeure situations occur”

According to the available information, the next opponent of Islam Makhachev should be Brazilian Charles Oliveira, whose fight is tentatively scheduled for next summer.

The last time the Russian entered the octagon on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, he successfully defended his title against Australian Alex Volkanovski, who he knocked out in the first round.
