British expert Gareth Davies commented on the defeat of 40-year-old Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) to the undisputed super middleweight champion Mexican Saul Alvarez (58-2-2, 37 KOs) – over the weekend the veteran lost by unanimous decision.
“We were counting on a competitive battle, –
reasoning Davis. “But five years have passed since their first fight. And Golovkin is no longer 35. He is already 40. He is simply not able to compete with peak Canelo now. In this battle, he still could not join the battle. And Alvarez interfered with him in every possible way. Canelo dominated. Although it must be admitted that there were very few strikes, there was not enough action. Canelo was the boss from start to round 8. Golovkin gave everything that was in the last four rounds. And I gave him three three-minutes – from the 9th to the 11th.
According to the expert, “the judges went too far, giving Golovkin more than he earned. I can still understand 116-112, but 115-113?.. One more round and it would have been a draw. And with it, again, the quiet horror caused by the quality of refereeing in boxing.
On the veteran’s prospects: “I’m a little disappointed that he slept through 2/3 of the fight, but I’m glad that he will now return to his native middleweight and fight in unification with Jermall Charlo or some other middleweight. I don’t think it’s fully spent yet, but it’s close to the end of its career.”
