“You have to understand the reason why he doesn’t want to fight the Mexicans. By losing to Bivol, Canelo lost nothing. But if he loses to the Mexican, it will take away all his heritage from him, says Benavidez Sr. – It sits in his head, he thinks so. That’s why he doesn’t want to fight a Mexican fighter, because then he won’t be able to look good. That is my opinion.”
“He won’t fight a Mexican, especially David (Benavidez). There is no chance that he will ever agree to fight with David, Jose insists. “He’s scared as hell, that’s the thing. He’s scared and that’s the fucking reality in boxing. Therefore, he does not fight with good and dangerous fighters, but chooses his opponents, whom he is sure of defeating in advance. Mexicans – they go out and give themselves without a trace. They leave their heart in the ring. Alvarez doesn’t want to mess with these guys.”
Note that the last time Canelo entered the ring against a compatriot in May 2017 – and it was a fierce mismatch against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., ending with his crushing victory on points. In total, since he first became world champion in 2011, Alvarez has three such fights: in addition to Chavez, he beat Alfonso Gomez (TKO 6) and Alfredo Angulo (TKO 10).
