“I was wrong about Bivol.” Abel Sanchez on Canelo’s defeat and today’s Golovkin

Famous American coach Abel Sanchez in
interview commented on the victory of the WBA super champion in light heavyweight (up to 79.4 kg) Russian Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) over the pound-for-pound leader and the absolute champion of the second middleweight (up to 76.2 kg) ) Mexican Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs).

The American mentor admitted that he was wrong before the fight and incorrectly predicted the winner. Sanchez also commented on the possible next steps of the Mexican boxing star and answered a question about the unified middleweight champion (up to 72.6 kg) Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs).

Tendril? Which Usyk? Canelo Alvarez failed Bivol – report WMMAA

I don’t know if you watched the fight, but Canelo didn’t win against Bivol. What do you think happened that night if you had a chance to see it?

Actually, I didn’t watch the fight. But I constantly correspond with my acquaintance publicist and put on fights. We bet a dollar per fight. I think we talked about this fight on Thursday. He asked me what I think. I said Canelo should win. I thought Canelo was more active in terms of fighting. I thought Bivol had a safety first style. But he is a very talented fighter. He is a world champion, he is an amateur world champion, he is an unbeaten fighter, he is bigger, very well trained. I told my buddy, and I can show you the correspondence: “If Bivol comes out of his safe shell, I think it will be an interesting fight, because Bivol is a very talented fighter.” From what I heard, he came out of the shell and attacked Canelo.

Canelo is doing what very few fighters are willing to do right now. He took his first welterweight title or something, and then went all the way up to 79.4 kg. This is a big test for him. He fought one of the best and most talented fighters in the division. I didn’t think Bivol had the style to beat Canelo but obviously I was wrong.

Where will Canelo go next? It has been mentioned that a trilogy with Golovkin is possible. I don’t know if it will take place. I think a rematch is still being considered. If you were his coach, what advice would you give him?

“I would say a fighter like Canelo, with the approach he brings to the sport, I think he will go for a rematch. I think he will come back, try to understand what went wrong and try to fix it. There is nothing wrong with a good rematch. From what I heard, it was a very, very good fight. It was a fight for boxing fans. If they do it again, it will be the same kind of duel. And there is also the possibility of a fight with Gennady. Those are two great fights for him.

Have you looked at Gennady Golovkin since he left you? Can you just rate his style for me, what does he look like, what do you think he is trying to do?

No, I’ll be honest with you and tell you why. I do not want to answer such questions, because he has a very good coach now. I do not want to talk about what he did before, but does not do now. Now he does what he does. He has a good coach. The coach cannot change him in two fights. It takes time to instill a style, instill an attitude to the matter. Let’s hope they get a rematch with Canelo and he does well. I honestly wish him only success.
