UFC 280: Oliveira vs. Makhachev took place Oct. 22 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (22-3) looked to defend his belt against former titleholder T.J. Dillashaw (17-5) in the night’s co-main event. ESPN+ paid-per-view aired the fight live.

Round 1

Dillashaw comes out in orthodox but he’s going to switch stances a lot. Sterling will be wearing orthodox.

Immediate action from both with both men kicking and kicking. Sterling grabs a kick, and Sterling wins the scramble. Dillashaw is wincing in pain and he main have injured himself during that scramble. He looked like he might tap. He looked like he might tap. Sterling is now mounting and unloading.

Dillashaw can’t offer any help here, and Dillashaw will take care of him if he gets hurt. Dillashaw is forced to roll his back because Sterling looks like a beast from that position. Sterling is attacking his neck with a body triangle. This makes Dillashaw’s job easier than eating the shots.

Dillashaw still rolling but Sterling is staying with him and he’s clearly hurt. He was unable to move and had no space. Sterling was unflinching and stayed on Sterling. Couldn’t be a worse start for Dillashaw.

Sterling is still in his backpack, the triangle secured again. He’s working away at it but this works better for Dillashaw. Sterling places his hand on Sterling’s shoulder and spins him. Dillashaw is able to get up and into space but on his feet you can see that his left shoulder is dislocated. Sterling is shouting to Sterling that he has done the exact same thing. That Dillashaw is still in there with this is a testament to his will power.

Sterling shoots again but with short time, Dillashaw will make the final bell. Can they put it back in in the corner though?

Round 2

Marc Goddard is immediately checking on Dillashaw’s shoulder. Goddard claims he was alerted by Goddard to the pre-existing condition. Dillashaw is screwed though with this arm being this way.

Sterling immediately kicked the arm. He’s attacking it and that’s smart. Dillashaw is clearly trying to his that arm some, fighting solely with his right hand. Sterling fires, but it is impossible to defend takedowns using one arm. Sterling gets top position.

This fight is finished for all intents. Dillashaw can’t do anything, and it is only a matter of his survival. Sterling isn’t dominating the position right now, just holding in half mount. Although he is landing shots, it doesn’t really matter. Dillashaw lost this fight when he made the walk compromised.

Now Sterling grabs a headlock and goes for a D’Arce! Dillashaw escapes but his arm has popped back out. Sterling even gives him a breath while Dillashaw tries to pop it back in. Allowing this fight to continue is very, very dumb. Goddard should step in. Sterling is yelled at by Ray Longo: “No Mercy .”

Sterling gets a takedown, and now he is moving back to the mount. Sterling is now hammering on him, but this should be over. goddard finally steps in, 6 minutes too late.

Sterling still did the right thing.
