Haney – Lomachenko instead of a rematch with Kambosos. Hearn’s opinion

Promoter Eddie HearnMatchroom Boxing) sorted out the situation with the absolute lightweight champion American Devin Haney (28-0, 15 KOs), who confidently beat the local fighter George Kambosos Jr. (20-1, 10 KOs) last weekend in Australia and took away all the titles from him . Despite a rematch clause in his contract, Hearn maintains that a second fight may not take place.

“Look at the situation through the eyes of a promoter,”
boss says Matchroom Boxing. – Here I am, how I wanted to participate in the organization of their first duel. But about as much, I would not want to have obligations for revenge prescribed in the contract. Yes, I don’t know all the details of the contract. But Kambosos has the right to revenge. And the promoter is now obliged to pay him money, although there is no sporting reason in the second fight. You understand, when the first fight ends with a score of 120-108, then what’s the point in a rematch? But Kambosos will not refuse him, which is understandable.

Hearn believes there are other options for dealing with the problem: “Promoter Bob Arum knows how to handle these cases. He can say to Kambosos: “Dude, let Haney fight Vasily Lomachenko, and we will make an intermediate fight for you or even offer you a compensation. Plus, you will get the right to fight the winner.” No, it is not certain that he will agree. He can push for a rematch in Australia. And then the promoter will have problems, because this event will go into the red. What’s up with Haney then? For him, revenge is even more money than in the first fight. It’s not Devin that’s the problem, it’s the promoters who have to put their money on the table.”

Hearn believes that Haney won’t stay at 61.2 kg for long: “Otherwise I’ll have a shock. He talked so much about moving to 63.5 kg. Moreover, if he stays with ESPNthen there will be a lot of cool fights for him – Teofimo Lopez or even Josh Taylor.

Experts DAZN also the other day discussed all the pros and cons of an immediate revenge. Interestingly, Lomachenko took 3rd place in the updated lightweight rankings from The Ring.
