Haney fight Lomachenko or move to super lightweight? Hearn’s opinion

Last weekend in Melbourne (Australia), the undisputed lightweight champion American Devin Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) confidently defeated the previous holder of all belts in the division, Australian George Kambosos (20-2, 10 KOs), in a rematch, but at the same time he looked creepy weighing.

It is possible that the champion tied up with light weight. Meanwhile, promoter Bob Arum (Top Rank) dreams of taking him down in a face-to-face fight with the former division leader Ukrainian Vasily Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs).

Promoter Eddie Hearn has experience of working with both fighters (Matchroom Boxing). His
opinion: “Hopefully Devin stays at lightweight for one more fight and fights Lomachenko. I believe Haney can beat him. You know, Devin gets criticized for his supposedly boring style. I disagree. I consider him an incredible fighter. Very smart. This is hard to beat. Only a select few can do this. Who exactly? Like Shakur Stevenson. Possibly “Tank” Davis. But I don’t think so. Maybe Ryan Garcia, but also unlikely.

According to Hearn, there is only one fight in the division better than Haney vs. Lomachenko: “The biggest fight is Davis vs. Garcia. He is two heads ahead of everyone else. You need to understand that everything is decided by the interest of the audience. And these two will attract not only old-school fans to the fight (this will be done primarily by Gervont), but also their subscribers. And that’s what makes Ryan interesting. But Haney vs Lomachenko is still a great fight. But even he can not be compared with Davis vs Garcia. This one is simply unbeatable.”

On whether to wait for Haney vs. Lomachenko: “It’s only a matter of time before Devin moves up to the first welterweight division. I saw with my own eyes how difficult it is for him to lose weight. It’s just that this guy is an unreal pro. You need to understand that if he does not give a fight to Lomachenko, then he will be accused of allegedly escaping from Vasily. What if they fight? I think the chances are about 50/50. But in Top Rank there are options for Devin and at 63.5 kg. Yes, they lost Jose Cepeda and the WBC title. But they still have Josh Taylor and the WBO belt.”

Meanwhile, the expert said that Haney would do everything to avoid a fight with Lomachenko. He recalls that if not for the war in Ukraine, Haney would have continued to enjoy his “popcorn” belt. Devin, of course, answered the expert. Just be careful, there is obscene vocabulary!
