Absolute lightweight champion American Devin Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) and ex-division hegemon Vasily Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) from Ukraine are expected to fight on May 20 in Las Vegas (USA).
But the contract for the fight has not yet been signed. Apparently, the parties had some contentious issues – it became known that Haney wants concessions from Lomachenko.
What kind of concessions are these?
reasoning boxing commentators.
Bernard Osuna: We don’t know all the details. But as far as I remember, Lomachenko in New York (after the fight with Jemaine Ortiz) said that he was “ready to make any concessions” for a chance to fight for all the belts.
Mike Coppinger: Bernardo, what other options could there be? This, of course, is about the distribution of the prize fund, about money. I talked to Devin. And he does not hide that he expects concessions from Lomachenko. He did not give details. But I suspect that we are talking about a fee.
After all, what do we already have? We have a date. We have a battlefield. But there is no deal yet. So I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s all about. Devin is confident that they will agree. And I’m sure. But so far there is no deal. Hope it gets sorted out next week.
Tim Bradley: Yes Kopp. It’s definitely all about money. It is for this reason that the contract has not yet been signed. I think Haney deserves every dollar he asks. And now he has the right to take advantage of his advantage, his status.
He did what Lomachenko was supposed to do – went to Australia and beat George Kambosos twice. Lomachenko says he’ll do anything for this fight. Indeed, he needs this fight more than Devin needs it. Everyone needs to understand this.
Therefore, Lomachenko’s only option is to make concessions. Even if he has to fight for less money than the minimum that is written in his contract. If he really wants to become an absolute, he will have to go even for that.
