Former world champion and finalist World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) Briton George Groves shared his opinion about Saturday’s fight between compatriots Liam Smith (33-3-1, 20 KOs) and Chris Eubank Jr. (32-3, 23 KOs) – the victory by knockout in the 4th round was celebrated by the underdog.
Groves dated Eubank in WBSS Semi-Finals – was injured during the fight, but held out until the final gong and snatched the victory. He
thinksthat Chris should not have agreed to this fight: “If I were him, I would not have accepted the fight with Smith. I think it was a priori a bad decision. Firstly, I’m not sure that in his case it was worth agreeing to cut to the average weight limit. At the weigh-in, he looked somehow too thin. And in the course of the battle, it seemed that his ability to hold a blow had disappeared somewhere.
Groves suggests that “after what happened, Eubank may end his career altogether. I think he really lacked the support of his father (for the first time he was not present at the fight of his son). I know what I’m talking about, because earlier we not only crossed paths in the ring, but also sparred together. And my father was always there. And now he is gone. And it’s sad. Moreover, Chris recently lost his brother (29-year-old Sebastian Eubank died in 2021 from a heart attack), with whom they were very close. It turns out that he single-handedly fought the entire Smith family (Liam was supported by the Callum brothers, Paul and Stephen). I hope he can come to terms with this result. Revenge? I don’t think he should take revenge…
Immediately after the fight, Liam Smith commented on the resounding victory over Eubank, and then announced the conditions for a rematch. The loser blames the case and the referee.
