Golovkin’s coach: ‘Defence is the key to defeating Canelo’

Coach Jonathon Banks claims that, together with his star player Kazakh veteran Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs), they are working hard on defense ahead of the third head-to-head fight with Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) which will take place on 17 September T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (USA).

Banks sure, that solid defensive performance is the key to success, but at the same time argues that “this does not mean that we are betting only that the fight will go the whole distance. But every day we pay the most attention to defense, because at this level, somewhere around 90% of fighters are much more effective in attack, but at the same time not as good in defense. Therefore, the goal is to pay maximum attention to protective actions. The bigger, the better”.

Banks is confident that there is no single key to defeating Canelo, but “if Gennady works the way I ask him … If he boxes through the jab, then he will have the final say. And there will definitely be no problems with psychology, because Gennady already feels that he won the previous two fights. He was never given the victory, so this time he wants to do things a little differently. He wants to make sure that this time he wins for sure. There is only one goal – victory. And my task is to teach him how to achieve his goal.”

Banks suspects that Canelo will box differently, because in May he learned that the judges are not always safe in Las Vegas – he lost to Russian light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol: “Money fighters are often preferred in Vegas? No, not often. ALWAYS! In the first fight, Golovkin took 9 rounds out of 12, but even that was not enough to win. Canelo for the first time in the status of a more moneyed boxer lost in Vegas. He was shocked that this was even possible. Now he knows that he can lose on the judges’ cards. This means that he will fight differently. I think he will really try to win by knockout … “

Previous fights between Golovkin and Alvarez took place in 2017-2018 at the same arena. At first, a draw was recorded, then the Mexican won minimally. Those fights took place in the middleweight limit, and this time they will fight for all the belts in the super middleweight limit. The current division absolute is Canelo.

Golovkin admitted yesterday that “Canelo will help me retire financially.” And the favorite got from the ex-“teammate” – Ryan Garcia deftly took away Alvarez, remembering Hatton to him.
