The head of the promotion company Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, claims that he has finally gathered the moral strength to throw his unbeaten Mexican combat unit Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) under a real “tank”. In other words, he decided to arrange for his ward the first real fight in a long time, bringing him in the ring with Gennady Golovkin himself (42-2-1, 37 KOs) – the reigning WBA / IBF middleweight world champion.
Recall that Munguia in the past owned the WBO light middleweight title, but after moving up to the category above, he can’t face an opponent from the top category. Unless, of course, you include Gary O’Sullivan, Tureano Johnson, Camila Sheremeta, Gaby Rosado, Dimitrius Ballard, Jimmy Kelly and Gonzalo Coria.
“Oh yes, Jaime Munguia vs Golovkin, it is very, very likely that this fight will take place. I think they both have to prove themselves in some way,” says De La Hoya. “I think that would be the perfect fight. And I think this fight should take place. By the way, we have already contacted the GGG people. And I have no doubt that Jaime Munguia will fight any opponent.”
“In general, this is my goal for 2023 is to make Jaime Munguia the best fighter and lead him to the world title. But first and foremost, I want him to fight Golovkin,” Oscar concluded.
Meanwhile, Golovkin’s former coach urged Munguya not to go where he shouldn’t.
