Golovkin: I don’t have to be Bivol to beat Canelo

In May, in Las Vegas (USA), the WBA World light heavyweight champion playing for Kyrgyzstan, Russian Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) confidently beat the owner of all belts in the lower division and (at that time) the leader P4P rating Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs).

The loser will return to the ring in September – he will have a third fight with his age-old Kazakhstani antagonist Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs). For Canelo, this will be the debut defense of the title of undisputed super middleweight champion, and for the veteran, the first fight in his career in this weight.

reasoning Golovkin: I don’t think I need to make any major changes to my style. I don’t have to be Bivol to beat Canelo. I don’t have to fight like him to gain some sort of advantage in a fight. Moreover, the fight itself will take place in a different weight. Like I said before, losing to Bivolu will bring Canelo to the ground. So he will approach the fight with me more seriously. But I don’t care. My task is to show all the best that I can.”

The veteran claims that “I am preparing for the fight very seriously: I work hard and a lot. I think there is a huge difference between the middle and super middle divisions. A very noticeable difference. But I would not say that I feel it strongly. I would not say that here I am faster or more powerful. I feel good in middleweight. But here it’s just different. I just feel like I’m a little heavier.”

Golovkin previously hinted at ending his career after the fight with Canelo, and now he is discussing his future plans with might and main. The veteran owns the WBA Super and IBF middleweight belts: “After the fight, I will make the final decision. Everything will depend on the situation. If there is an opportunity to keep all the titles, then I will return to the middleweights for unification fights. After all, no one has ever done this before. In general, we will act according to the situation.”

The other two belts in this weight are owned by American Jermall Charlo (WBC) and Golovkin’s compatriot Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (WBO). The latter, by the way, yesterday announced the sweep of the middle weight.

Earlier it became known that the promoter of Hearn has a claim to Golovkin before the third fight with Canelo: “Why were you silent?”
