40-year-old WBA / IBF middleweight champion (up to 72.6 kg) Kazakhstani Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) cannot yet give a definite answer to the question of when he will hang his gloves on a nail.
One thing is clear: so far he has no such plans.
“Retirement is a difficult issue. It’s hard to say,” Golovkin said. “Every day can bring something new. Even if we just look into the future after the next fight, we will see what opportunities open up for us in terms of the financial side and the attractiveness of a potential fight. I will make a decision based on the situation when the time is right.”
“It’s hard to make predictions. I am in boxing because I like it, – Gennady emphasized. – When you make a decision to end your career, it is usually not based on only one reason. There are several reasons that eventually come into play. Well, I’m still in business.”
Recall that the next fight Golovkin will hold on September 17 against the Mexican Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs). The Kazakhstani recently admitted that Canelo would help him retire financially.
Meanwhile, Gennady’s coach admits that Golovkin is the same “alien” as Foreman and Hopkins.
