Gennady Golovkin: ‘Canelo win would be the biggest win of my career’

40-year-old world middleweight champion from Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) shared his thoughts on the upcoming third fight against the absolute champion of the super middleweight division (up to 76.2 kg) Mexican Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs), which is scheduled for September 17 in Las Vegas (USA).

Please note that in 2017-2018 boxers twice entered the ring, the result of which was a draw and Alvarez’s victory on points. In both cases, the decisions of the judges were not unambiguous.

“A lot of time has passed (after the previous two fights), now we are already different fighters,” Golovkin stated in an interview with
Las Vegas Review Journal. “Moving forward is the right approach. Don’t look back at past fights and train with the thought that this is a separate fight.”

“I’m sure it won’t be an easy fight. My opponent is a champion, he has four belts, and he is probably the best fighter in this weight (up to 76.2 kg), – said the Kazakhstani. – I rise in this category for the first time and fight with the best in it. Most likely, I will feel fresh at this weight, I will be ready from a physical point of view. I think I will be even more comfortable (than middleweight). On the other hand, I must say that I feel incredibly comfortable in my category as well.”

Golovkin has no intention of downplaying the upcoming fight and claims that a win over Canelo would be top of his list of accomplishments:

“That would be the biggest win of my career. It would be the best thing that ever happened.”

Well-known analyst Teddy Atlas is sure that Golovkin needs to beat not only Canelo, but also three judges.
