This sad news was confirmed in social networks by his pupils-sons, ex-world featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. and unbeaten prospects – bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell and welterweight contender Gary Antoine Russell.
Russell Sr., himself a former boxer, began training his sons after he brought the eldest of his 11 children to the section, writes

In recent years, the father of the family had serious health problems: complications from type 2 diabetes and several small strokes. In December, his left leg was amputated, limiting his ability to coach his sons.
