Former Strikeforce champion: “Chimaev can burst out like fireworks and disappear”

Former top UFC fighter and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson, who is a commentator and host of the analytics podcast, is not thrilled with Hamzat Chimaev and believes the Chechen fighter may not live up to expectations.

“I’m not thrilled with Hamzat Chimaev, especially after seeing his last fight,” “Punk” said while speaking with John McCarthy on another edition of the Weighing In podcast. “Everybody’s like, ‘You’re stupid, you’re just a hater,’ but I’ve been in this game too long and I don’t care what anybody else says. I don’t buy into that hype. Fighters come and go. They fail, they try to get back on track for a while, but some of them fail and others manage to be reborn”

“Charles Oliveira is one of those guys who has been revived, but there have been some guys who have faded into oblivion. Melvin Gillard, he came along and burst out like fireworks and then went out and disappeared and I don’t even know where he is now. I don’t want to offend anybody – that happens to a lot of fighters. The same thing could happen to Chimaev”

Undefeated Khamzat Chimaev earned his seventh UFC victory in October, defeating former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman by majority decision on a three-round majority decision. Borz is currently nursing a hand injury, and after his recovery, he could face the winner of a middleweight title fight between Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis to headline UFC 297 on Jan. 20 in Toronto.
