“We discussed it with colleagues and everyone agrees that it makes sense,” Enik told The Schmo. “Five rounds at lightweight, the main event is a top notch contender fight that I think could headline a number show even without a title on the line. There is not the slightest doubt about that.”
The day before, UFC President Dana White officially announced that the long-awaited rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje on July 29 will headline UFC 291 in Salt Lake City, with the vacant BMF title vacated by Jorge Masvidal at stake.
At the moment, the UFC lightweight title is held by Russian Islam Makhachev, who on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi should defend the championship belt against the winner of the fight between Charles Oliveira and Benil Dariush, however, it is possible that the fight between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje can make adjustments to this plan.
