The fighter announced this to his fans on social networks.
“I lay in bed all day, I have staphylococcus aureus. It hurts so much that I can’t walk,” Poirier wrote.
“On the second day I go to the hospital. De***o gets serious,” he later added, posting a photo of him in a hospital bed with an IV.
ESPN sportswriter Brett Okamoto said the decision to hospitalize the fighter was made after his body failed to respond to antibiotics.
“Regarding Dustin Poirier’s hospitalization – I was told it was staphylococcus aureus, but he hasn’t responded to antibiotics in the past 24 hours,” the reporter wrote. “Now the doctors are working with his blood – I hope we will get some answers today”
Dustin Poirier, 33, made his last fight on November 12 at UFC 281 in New York, finishing with a rear naked choke in the third round of Michael Chandler. Thus, the American fighter returned his career to a successful course after an unsuccessful attempt to take the UFC lightweight title from Charles Oliveira, to whom he lost by rear naked choke in the third round.
