Dominic Cruz and Cody Garbrandt rematch in development for July

A rematch between the two former UFC bantamweight champions could take place seven years after the first fight.

“It was a good fight – Dominick Cruz is a sports legend,” Cody Garbrandt was quoted as saying by MMA News. “It was a great evening for me as I put on a real masterclass against one of the greatest bantamweights in history. And he’s still here, doing his thing. Ali Abdelaziz called me the other day and said, ‘Would you like to have a rematch with Dominick Cruz in July?’ Of course, I said ‘Yes’. I have nothing against Dominic, I respect him a lot, but I feel that he has no chance against me.”

In December 2016, Cody Garbrandt took the UFC bantamweight championship belt from Dominick Cruz by defeating The Dominator by unanimous decision after five rounds, but lost the title in the next fight, losing by technical knockout in the second round to TJ Dillashaw.

In March of this year, Garbrandt returned to a successful track after two defeats in a row, winning a unanimous decision against Trevin Jones, and Cruz in August last year failed to extend his winning streak to three matches, losing by a fourth-round knockout to Marlon Vera.

Currently, Dominic Cruz is ranked seventh in the UFC bantamweight division, while Cody Garbrandt is not in the top 15 best fighters in the division.
