The announcement was made by Andy Foster, head of the California State Athletic Commission.
“He will be in Nurmagomedov’s corner,” Foster told MMAFighting. “We have a court order authorizing him to do that.”
The court previously granted Velasquez permission to participate in wrestling tournaments and charity events. He also regularly attends the “American Kickboxing Academy” where he is involved in coaching.
The 41-year-old retired heavyweight found himself under investigation after he staged a shooting chase last February while pursuing the vehicle of one Harry Gularte, who was accused of molesting Velasquez’s son. The former UFC champion chased the vehicle, firing a .40-caliber handgun, and ended up hitting Gularte’s stepfather, who was shot in the arm.
Following the incident, Cain Velasquez was arrested and spent the next eight months in custody before being released on one million dollars bail.
The title fight between Russia’s Usman Nurmagomedov and American Brent Primus, which is a lightweight grand prix semifinal, will be the main event of Bellator 300, which takes place on October 7 in San Diego.
