Colby Covington: “Khamzat Chimaev ran away from me at middleweight”

UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington says his return to the octagon has been delayed for so long through no fault of his own, but because potential opponents have refused to fight him.

“They wanted to set up our fight with Hamzat Chimaev, but he’s a clown, he’s unprofessional, and he ran away from me to middleweight,” “Chaos” told ESPN. “It sucks because it’s the reason my comeback has been delayed for so long.”

“You think I would have been made the number one contender for the UFC welterweight title if I was turning down fights and sitting idle all this time? No! I took every fight they offered – Hamzat Chimaev, Dustin Porier, other names they called, and I said ‘yes, yes, and yes again’ every time.”

On Oct. 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, Hamzat Chimaev defeated Kamara Usman by majority decision at the middleweight division, moving from fourth in the UFC welterweight rankings to ninth in the organization’s middleweight division, while Colby Covington will attempt to take the UFC welterweight championship belt from Briton Leon Edwards on Dec. 16 at UFC 296 in Las Vegas.
