Canelo loses to both Benavidez and Morrel – promoter

Experienced American promoter Sampson Levkowitz flattered Cuban WBA World super-middleweight (76.2 kg) secondary title holder David Morrell (8-0, 7 KOs), anticipating his future battle against his ward, “interim” world champion WBC David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs).

Levkowitz is convinced that these fighters are the future of this division, and the current undisputed champion at 76.2 kg Canelo Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) will not cope with either one or the other.

“For Plant, the fight against Morrel would have been a tougher test than the fight against Canelo,” said the promoter. Morrel is a great boxer. Big, strong, young. Just what you need in boxing. The only problem is that Morrel is not as well known as Canelo, but I’m sure Morrel will beat Canelo.”

“Morrel very easily transformed from amateur to professional, and this is often lacking for many, especially Russians,” Sampson emphasized. “He has an iron heart and very smart boxing. That is why he is the most difficult opponent for anyone, including Benavidez. For Benavidez, Plant is a 60-40 fight. With Morrel, to be honest, I see it as 50-50. Canelo will be the underdog with both Benavidez and Morrel.”

Levkowitz also added that if Alvarez decides to give up his 76.2 kg titles, then the unification fight between Benavidez and Morrel will take place on PPV and probably as early as September.

Benavidez vs. Plant is expected to take place in March. Here’s a prediction from the ex-champ who fought both.
