Canelo Alvarez is still the leader of P4P – the opinion of Suleiman

World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Suleiman believes that the undisputed super middleweight champion Mexican Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) deserves to remain at the top of the pound-for-pound ranking of the best boxers of our time, even despite the defeat from Dmitry Bivol in the beginning of May.

“In my pound, Canelo is number one, although this rating was invented in many ways for fun,” said Suleiman. “But for those who take it very seriously, hard times have come, because this year we have just incredible results. Canelo lost, Fury made a statement (by defeating Dillian Whyte), Charlo and Haney became the undisputed champions, Inoue and Beterbiev performed incredibly. And Errol Spence, Terence Crawford, so many great fighters.”

“So for those who make up P4P, this is a very interesting time, but also a difficult time too. There are a lot of contenders for leadership,” Mauricio stressed. “And yet, you know, it’s just not fair to take Canelo off the top spot. He lost a fight he couldn’t take and moved up in weight. Yet he was there (in the lead) for several years. It’s very easy to drop someone, but I don’t like that approach.”

As you know, there can be no consensus on P4P. Here is ours.
