South African welterweight Chris Van Heerden shared his opinion on the current American division tops – unified world champion Errol Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) and rising star Jaron Ennis (29-0, 27 KOs).
Van Heerden fought both: in 2015, he lost to Spence TKO 8, and at the end of 2020 he did not even hold one full round with Ennis, having received a serious cut, after which the fight was declared invalid.
Nevertheless, the experience gained was enough for the South African to compare the strike power of Errol and Jaron.
“Ennis has more punching power than Spence, I tell you. When Ennis hit me, I even got a little scared. “Oh, damn it, well, power,” I thought then, recalls Chris. Spence is a technically flawless fighter, 80% of his punches sting. And Ennis is a savage. He pounces on you, all so ferocious and wild. When he hit, everything seemed to light up red. This dude can knock out anyone. They both have power, but Ennis still hits harder than Spence.”
At the same time, at the moment, Van Heerden sees Spence as the favorite in a possible fight against Ennis:
“Can Ennis beat Spence? Not now. You can no longer say that Ennis is somewhere on the outskirts, he already has about 30 fights behind him. He is no longer a boy, he is a real fighter. But in terms of technique, Spence is almost flawless. Ennis is a little erratic in his swoops, and an elite fighter like Spence will make you pay for every mistake. And he fought big names. That’s why I’m betting that Spence will beat Ennis. But he won’t knock out.”
Speaking of Ennis, here Ward named the name of the boxer who will replace Spence and Crawford.
