Bobby Green came up short at UFC Vegas 49 after attempting to tackle an impossibly tough opponent like Islam Makhachev on just 10 days’ notice but he still felt the need to apologize after failing to live up to his own expectations in the performance.
The fight was over in a flash after Makhachev had secured his first knockdown in round one. He then passed Green’s defence and then hit Green with punches up the middle until Herb Dean, the referee, stopped proceedings.
” I did my best, guys,” Green stated on UFC Vegas 49 after-fight program. I’m sorry for all of my fans. You can be sure that I’ll live up to it. It was just what I did. I tried to do the best I could .”
Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the situation, Green still felt deflated because he didn’t get to show much of anything in the fight before Makhachev ended his night.
“First time I got taken out like that. It really sucks,” Green said. Green said, “I’m sure I’m throwing it together. I did what I can. I got up from the couch. I’m still banged-up from my last fight. I did the best I can with what I had.
“I really just wanted to get the chance to at least test the guy. It was interesting to see what you were up to. I think I know what you’re doing and I understand what you’re doing now. So if we ever cross paths [again], I will be prepared for him.”
Green had just won two weeks earlier at UFC 271 Houston. He then quickly turned around to face Makhachev, replacing Beneil Dariush who was injured and forced him from the card.
It was difficult to make preparations for someone like Makhachev, who doesn’t have much time. But Green could not help but feel impressed by their fight on Saturday night.
“He is so patient, he’s strong, and just keeps going little by little until he gets there,” Green stated. He was so steady at holding the mount that I eventually was able to turn it around. Nobody has ever been so strong.
“So I’ve got to get on my weight training and my muscles to build up that strength for this division.”
Even though the result didn’t go his way, Green was praised for his willingness to take this opportunity after there were many calls for him to get his first UFC main event following a recent win over Nasrat Haqparast.
Considering the outpouring of support he received, Green could easily get another headlining spot in the near future — perhaps with a full training camp next time around — but he might actually need some convincing.
According to Green, he didn’t like the wait game associated with the main event slot. He was backstage looking at everyone else while he was actually one of two to enter the Octagon.
” Can I be truthful? No [I don’t want another main event]!” Green said. “I know my guys don’t want to hear that. [My manager] Jason [House] has a freakin’ baby, but that was so many years ago!
“I just want to fight and get it over with. At the very least, put me on the main deck. I will open it. It just took so long. It took so long.
