For the first time, Beterbiev tried on the championship title in 2018 – in the fight for the vacant IBF title, he defeated Enrico Koelling by late knockout. In the opening defense, he unexpectedly got drunk with the not very famous Callum Johnson – he was knocked down, but got to his feet and soon knocked out the challenger.
In 2019, Beterbiev became the unified world champion – in unification he exhausted and prematurely beat Alexander Gvozdik, the owner of the WBC belt. Later he defended himself against the mandatory challenger according to this version, Marcus Braun (KO 9).
In the last fight held, he defeated WBO champion Joe Smith in two rounds.
Yard will fight for the title for the second time, again approaching the fight in the status of a mandatory challenger from the WBO. In 2019, the Briton lost ahead of schedule to Sergey Kovalev.
