Anthony Pettis isn’t focused on a rematch with Jeremy Stephens, but he also won’t say no if that’s what the PFL wants.
On a recent episode of The MMA Hour, Stephens, who recently signed with the PFL, noted his interest in a rematch with Pettis. They fought previously at UFC 138, with Pettis winning a split decision. This was his first UFC victory. Stephens is disappointed that Pettis wants to rectify some of his losses last year, especially the two that he sustained as part the 2021 light season.
“No problem,” Pettis replied on The MMA Hour to be asked about a possible rematch. “Honestly, I want to run back the ones that I lost. Clay Collard, Raush Manfio are my favorites. Stephens is a great example of how to make it enjoyable.
“Stephens is on of those guys that can knock out anybody if he connects. It makes the division more fun. But my main focus is still on Clay Collard or Raush Manfio, who I lost to. These are the men I’d like to see in next season .”
Stephens and Pettis have had a divergent career since their fight. Pettis was awarded the UFC lightweight title. He fought at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight. Stephens, meanwhile, dropped down to featherweight not long after his loss and spent the next seven years competing there.
Perhaps realizing that Pettis may be more interested in a rematch than he is, Stephens tried to persuade Pettis into entering a fight by saying that Pettis was “fat and out-of-shape” last time they saw him, and that Pettis has been getting paid too much. “Showtime,” however, says that he would love to prove Stephens wrong, if given the chance.
” I think I saw some Instagram content about cheeseburger cheeks or that my salary was too high,” Pettis stated. “Whatever he wants — look at my UFC career and WEC career, and look at his career. I beat him, so of course he has to talk sh*t. He has to say something. In rematches I am undefeated so I look forward to running it back. My chin was tested to determine how cheeseburger cheeks felt. Baby .”
