Aljamain Sterling: ‘Merab’s championship leaves me hanging’

If No. 2 ranked UFC lightweight Merab Dvalishvili gets a title shot and becomes the division’s new champion, it puts the career of his friend and teammate Aljamain Sterling in limbo.

The former champion revealed this in another video published on his YouTube channel.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for Merab to get a title shot and become the first Georgian UFC champion,” the American said. “And of course, his championship leaves me hanging. I know people are going to ask, ‘Then where does that leave you, Aljo?’ Maybe I’ll stay at lightweight and have one or two fights and then move up to featherweight. Or go straight up. We’ll see how things work out.”

On August 19 at UFC 292 in Boston, Aljamain Sterling lost his flyweight championship belt to Sean O’Malley by second-round technical knockout. The new UFC champion said he plans to make his first title defense this December against the division’s number six, Marlon Vera, who handed him the only defeat of his career three years ago.

Merab Dvalishvili has made it clear that he expects to be the first to challenge the American if Sterling does not get an immediate rematch.
