Aljamain Sterling has confirmed a move up to welterweight

No matter how the title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley ends, it will be the reigning UFC lightweight champion’s last appearance.

Sterling made the announcement on the regular edition of The MMA Hour program.

“This is most likely my last fight at flyweight,” the American stated. “There’s a 99% chance of that happening. If I win, it’s 100 percent. And I’ll win this fight, you can rest assured, and I’ll walk away. It’s Merab Dvalishvili’s time.”

The flyweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley will be the main event of UFC 292, which takes place Aug. 19 in Boston.

If Sterling is victorious this weekend, he will have four successful defenses of the championship belt he claimed in March 2021 with a disqualification win over Peter Yan.
